When your carpet needs a scrub with shampoo, you may be tempted to pick up the first one you see. But carpet shampoos are produced with different uses in mind. There is a range of criteria here. Some of the more important criteria when choose the best carpet shampoos are:
- General Refreshing
- Stain Removal
- Odor Removal
No one shampoo will do all of these well, so it is best to pick the type you need. We’ll present a range of products for these tasks, with some ranking higher based on overall performance and versatility. Note that most can act as refreshers.
10. HOST Odor Exploder Carpet Cleaner
This product is primarily best for those who only want to remove odors and can work on upholstery as well as carpet. Although the product is highly concentrated and seems to do its job well, there are a couple of downsides that keep it from being rated higher.
Firstly, many users report that it is still difficult to completely eliminate the odor of cat urine despite liberal use of the product.
Secondly, the chemical smell of the cleaner is said to be very strong and unpleasant, which may be an issue for some.
9. Carpet Fresh 10.5 oz No-Vacuum Morning Rain Fragrance
This very inexpensive cleaner has a number of attractive features, working to eliminate a variety of odors with no vacuuming or other efforts required.
However, this item is simply an odor remover and can’t be used for other cleaning needs. Its ease of use and versatility in odor elimination make it an excellent choice for those just looking to get rid of errant smells.
As with some other odor eliminators, not much to complain about here other than the fragrance may not be for everyone.
8. Gonzo Stain Remover 8 fl oz – 12 Pack
Although each bottle is relatively small, we like that you can order twelve at once for a very low price, a great value. This cleaner is primarily for stain removal only, but it seems to do this very well. In addition, it is odorless, so an improvement on some stain removers that may have certain scents that are unappealing to some. It is fine to use on clothing and environmentally safe.
However, some users found it was a labor intensive shampoo that required a lot of scrubbing. It also was not always effective at removing strong, deep stains such as blood.
7. Hoover Platinum Collection Pet Plus Carpet and Upholstery Detergent
Another great dual-purpose product, this one from Hoover is a great option for general stain removal and pet odors and stains. It’s formulated to deal with the toughest stains and odors, from blood to simple spills. As a bonus it can be used with all commercial carpet machines, is endorsed by the Carpet and Rug Institute, and crafted to North American Electrical Standards. Unlike some strong cleaners, this one provides the scent of fresh linen.
Difficult to find any complaints about this one, though a few users had some trouble with urine removal.
6. Biokleen Carpet & Rug Shampoo Concentrate
We think this shampoo from Biokleen is primarily best on stains but it can work on odors, though perhaps not as well as a dedicated odor remover.
We like that it is a very gentle solution safe for use on all washable fibers including clothing. Users report very high performance for most tough stains and say it is better than many products they’ve tried before. There were some residual odor issues, but that’s to be expected with a product designed for stains, not odors.
5. Bubba’s Super Steamer Carpet Cleaner
We like Bubba’s for its excellent stain removal powers. The product works so effectively that it often reaches into the fibers of your carpet to bring out and remove long-buried stains that you hadn’t even noticed before. It can even lift the toughest blood or grease stains with ease, according to many users.
The product does have a somewhat strong smell, though unlike some other cleaners on the market, the smell dissipates quickly with this one, leaving few downsides.
4. BISSELL BigGreen Commercial 49G5-1 Carpet Cleaner
This useful cleaner has a patented triple-action cleaning solution that works nearly universally to get out tough stains from pets, spills, and other household issues. Offers additional Scotch Gard protection and also helps to eliminate odors making it a good all around choice.
Only minor complaints to be found, and usually when instructions are not followed (do not soak the carpet with this product; use sparingly).
3. ZEP ZUHTC128 Carpet Cleaner
This carpet cleaner gets very high marks from its strong stain removalpowers, with nearly all users very pleased in this regard. Users find it has a good mix of performance and value. Although touted as an odor remover as well, many users found the odor removing effect to be minimal, therefore we do not recommend it for this.
Some users complained of a good deal of excess suds when using this cleaner, compared to others.
2. Rug Doctor Pet Formula Carpet Cleaning Solution
As the name suggests, this carpet shampoo should be used primarily for cleaning pet stains and odors from your carpet. It’s ideal for softer, more delicate surfaces, and works in all commercial deep carpet cleaning units. This product is highly concentrated to ensure that all aspects of pet stain problems can be removed quickly and easily. Also, removes the odors, and is non-toxic for use around pets and kids alike.
Users have very few complaints other than sometimes needing to clean the surface prior to spraying, and leaving it covered for some time after spraying.
1. Hoover AH30330NF Cleanplus 2X Concentrated Carpet Cleaner and Deodorizer
The Cleanplus from Hoover gets best carpet cleaner/shampoo on our list because it is not only popular with many users, but it acts a both a stain and odor remover and seems to do both very well. As it can often be difficult to combine two or more carpet shampoo uses in a single product, we’re always happy to see it done.
Some minor complaints involving the strong chemical smell, but as it can be used on such a wide variety of surfaces and situations, you shouldn’t let this deter you unless you truly want something odorless.
There is no one size fits all solution here. But as you can see, there is a range of products, most quite inexpensive, to fit a variety of cleaning needs. Choose what works best for your current carpet issues, with features that are most important to you, and you can’t go wrong.
