Onions are a great way to get a ton of vitamins and nutrients in one inexpensive, easy-to-find food source. They also add a bit of kick to any dish. The problem is that the vapors that onions released when they’re cut can be quite irritating to eyes or skin. The best onion choppers eliminate these concerns and allow you to chop as much as you need.
When choosing an onion chopper, look for:
- Storage Capacity
- Design Features
We’ll take you through our favorites below, based on these criteria.
10. Freshware KT-402 2-in-1 Onion, Vegetable, Fruit, and Cheese Chopper
The “2-in-1” here refers to this chopper also being able to handle your cheese chopping needs; though many choppers that don’t advertise this design feature can still do it. The Freshware chopper is lightweight, efficient, and space-saving.. In terms of performance, the blades are durable, with ever-sharp designs to handle all chopping needs. Comes with a large storage capacity of over 1 liter as well.
However, it doesn’t rank higher because it is mostly for light chopping only, and is prone to breaking under stress.
9. Prepworks by Progressive Onion Chopper
This one has a very durable design and is notable for handling both light and heavy-duty chopping jobs with relative ease. Can also store up to two cups of chopped onions.
Some downsides are that, although it claims to be easy to clean, some users find that cleaning it can be a chore. I addition, many say that they must quarter onions before chopping, rather than the usual method of halving them; possibly some extra effort compared to other choppers out there.
8. Vremi Food Chopper One Piece Salad Vegetable Chopper and Slicer Dicer
This manual chopper allows you the freedom to chop as fast as you can press down on the plunger. Its design makes both chopping and cleanup quick and simple as the top portion acts as a cover to hold your finely chopped onions while you transfer them, for less mess.
We do recommend that you be a bit forceful when pressing, to ensure properly chopped onions. We have to take a few points away for small storage capacity though, and some users claim that the device can be quite flimsy, though most seem satisfied.
7. Brieftons QuickPull Food Chopper
The QuickPull model from Brieftons has a great design that allows for chopping, slicing, dicing and mincing of onions and all manner of veggies. There’s no need for bowls at the ready as you work because of the roomy storage area installed in the unit. Quality, highly-durable blades also give this chopper a nice edge in the performance category.
There are a minority of users who have had issues with vegetables being finely chopped on the bottom near the blades, while the food on top remains relatively unchopped.
6. Momugs 8 Cup Red Food Processor
We like the generous 8 cup storage capacity of this chopper from Momugs. Although you may not always make use of it, it’s handy to have such a large container on hand for when you need to chop for a party or gathering.
Users have very few complaints about this one, and many say it is their permanent replacement after many previous choppers have failed. It has high-performance value though it does take a couple of steps to set up properly. Its design incorporates a suctioned base to give you added control when chopping or milling.
5. BLACK+DECKER 1.5-Cup Electric Food Chopper
For something a bit different, here is an electric option from Black + Decker. Its blades feature a stay sharp technology for improved, long-lasting performance. Also has a decent storage capacity of 1.5 cups. This unit is well-made and most users are very satisfied with its excellent design, however some find there are problems getting it to fully chop items when the storage container is completely full.
4. Vegetable’s Chef – Onion, Vegetable, Fruit and Cheese Chopper
The great design features of this item mean it will easily chop, slice, and dice your onions and a host of other veggies you may need for small servings or a larger party.
Spacious storage of about 2 cups maximum means you can chop all that you might need. Most users report very satisfactory performance with this one. However, we should note that a small number of users report that the blades either bent or in some cases chipped after light use. These may have simply been defective products, as the majority of users were very happy.
3. Kwik-kut Cutlery Serrated Food Chopper
We really life the high efficiency performance combined with a very simple, easy to use design on this one. It’s not fancy and has no extras to speak of, but that’s okay. What it does, it does well. Easy to use and clean for just about anyone, and very affordable to boot, it makes a great intro or backup chopper.
Due to its design there is no storage capacity, so you’ll need to have a container handy. Some users report that it is flimsy, however, this is mostly in the case of chopping nuts, for which we do not recommend this chopper.
2. Onion Chopper Pro Vegetable Chopper by Müeller
This one is inexpensive as well, but a very tough and durable design with BPA-free plastic, combined with steel hinges. High marks for excellent storage capacity as well, able to hold over one liter of chopped onions and veggies.
Users report that the chopper performs very well, easily chopping everything in one swift motion that won’t need extra effort and fuss from you.
On the downside, if you are using it to chop other veggies like tomatoes, it has a tendency to crush rather than chop. Can also be rather difficult to clean.
1. Brieftons Manual Food Chopper
Another model from Brieftons, this one takes the top spot for best onion chopper on our list. There are many reasons for this. Firstly, it is compact yet very spacious, holding up to 3 cups of chopped vegetables, yet its lighrtweight design makes it great for travel and storage too.
